Can gum disease be reversed?

If you have noticed that your gums are red and swollen or you see blood when you brush and floss your teeth, you may need to see a dentist. These are signs of gum disease, a common dental concern that affects many people. To restore your oral health, gum disease must be treated as soon as possible, but can gum disease be reversed?

Can Gum Disease Be Reversed?

There are two stages of gum disease; the first stage is known as gingivitis, and the second stage is known as periodontitis.

Gingivitis on its own does not cause any permanent damage to your teeth and gums, and it can be reversed in the following ways:

  • A deep cleaning from your dentist
  • Antibiotics, if necessary
  • Proper oral hygiene
  • Lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and changing your diet

Periodontitis, or advanced gum disease, develops if your gingivitis goes untreated, and it causes irreversible damage to your teeth and gums. The good news is that periodontitis can be controlled in the following ways:

  • Deep cleanings from your dentist
  • Antibiotics
  • Oral surgeries
  • Proper oral hygiene
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Maintenance cleanings every three months
