Tooth-Colored Fillings: Why We Use Them and Why You Should Care

Nearly every adult in this country has at least one filling. In the past, the only option for treating tooth decay and keeping it from spreading was metal—amalgam—fillings. Patients in West Chester today have a better choice - tooth-colored fillings. Not only do these “composite” fillings look better because they are made to match the color of your tooth, but they have several other advantages as well.

The Advantages of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Less time in the dental chair for treatment is always a plus, and this is something you can enjoy when you opt for tooth-colored fillings. Because the composite material these fillings are made from bond directly to the tooth, less of the tooth structure needs to be removed before the filling is placed. Consequently, treatment is quicker.

Since composite fillings bond directly to the tooth, they are particularly strong and durable.

Unlike their amalgam counterparts, tooth-colored fillings are less likely to expand and contract with extremes in temperature. This means composite fillings last longer and do not tend to fracture over time as do metal fillings. Composite fillings can last 15 years or more!

Although silver amalgam fillings have been shown to be safe, many people feel more comfortable with composite materials, which usually consist of crushed plastic and glass.

Your tooth-colored fillings will blend in with your tooth seamlessly, so no one will see them when you are laughing or speaking.
