The first rule of general dentistry is that no pain is ever normal! If you are dealing with tooth pain, it is more than likely your body alerting you to the fact that something is wrong. Toothache discomfort can range from mild sensitivity to severe pain, depending on the problem.

If your toothache pain isn’t bad, you can probably wait until the next available appointment to see the dentist. But when that toothache becomes excruciating and unbearable, it’s time to call the dentist to be seen as soon as possible. At Joel R. Koch, DDS, in West Chester, we are used to dealing with dental emergencies, and we do our best to see you the same day you call in.

Possible Causes of a Toothache

If you haven’t suffered a blow or some kind of trauma to cause your tooth pain, it is likely from one of these common sources:

  • An infection in the tooth root
  • A cavity
  • A sinus infection
  • An impacted wisdom tooth
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Arthritis of the jaw

What to Do if You Have Emergency Tooth Pain

As mentioned previously, give us a call. Depending on the severity of your tooth pain, we can get you in right away or make an appointment in our next open time slot to deal with the dental issues.

Meanwhile, here are some tips for relief:

  • Rinse with warm salt water (about one teaspoon of salt per 8 ounces of water). If there is any debris around the tooth, use dental floss to remove it gently.
  • Use an over-the-counter pain reliever to help relieve your discomfort.
  • Use a cold pack over the cheek over the area in question to help with any swelling.
