Tips for Parents: Making Dental Care Fun for Kids

Fun for Kids

For some kids, cleaning their teeth can feel like a chore. They do a lackluster job so they can return to playing. Over time, this can mean an increase in cavities and much more!

Fortunately, there are things you can do to make dentistry more fun for your child. Let’s explore ways to keep your kids interested during oral care routines.

Your child’s dentist in West Chester, OH, recommends the following:

#1 Play Music During Oral Care

It’s a game! Tell your child you bet they can’t brush their teeth thoroughly before the song ends—and emphasize thoroughly. Can they hit every surface of every tooth? Choose a song that gives them ample time to do a good job.

#2 Allow Them to Choose

There are a lot of character-themed toothbrushes on the market and uniquely flavored toothpaste. There are even some toothbrushes that play music. If these items carry the American Dental Association seal of approval (and the toothbrush is soft-bristled), giving them a say in what they use may encourage ownership during their oral hygiene sessions and make the task more fun.

#3 Get the Tooth Fairy Involved

For young kids, the tooth fairy can be a big deal. Let them know that the tooth fairy is happiest when she receives a tooth that is clean and cavity-free.

#4 Praise and Reward a Job Well Done

You should take your child to the dentist every six months for dental care checkups. If your child presents with a cavity-free smile, praise their efforts and remind them that their brushing was why the dentist was so happy with their smile. It’s even okay to offer a small toy or reward for six months of excellent brushing and a cavity-free dental exam.
