Dental implants are renowned for their awesome durability. Of course, like natural teeth, they’re not immune to damage. Whether from trauma or infection, issues sometimes arise with dental implants.
The good news? In many cases, depending on which part is affected, a damaged dental implant can be restored. Here’s how!
Understanding the Parts of an Implant
A dental implant is made of three main components:
- The implant post, or titanium screw placed in the empty socket in the jawbone after tooth loss
- An abutment, which connects the implant post to a long-term restoration (usually a dental crown)
- A dental crown to replace the feel, function, and appearance of a natural tooth
It’s worth noting that damage can affect any one—or all three—of these components.
Crown or Abutment Damage
Most implant-related damage occurs in the crown or abutment. Chips, cracks, or loosening crowns are usually repairable. Your dentist can often replace just the crown without affecting the implant post itself. If the abutment is damaged, we may swap it out with a new one without affecting the implant.
Implant Post Damage or Failure
Damage to the implant post (the part fused with the jawbone) is more complex. Causes may include severe trauma, untreated gum disease (peri-implantitis), or insufficient bone support. Removal may be necessary if the implant fails or becomes loose. This requires additional healing and possible bone grafting before placing a new dental implant.
Can All Implants Be Fixed?
In many cases, yes, but unfortunately, we can't always fix a damaged dental implant. To ensure your dentist’s ability to address damage to your implants, make sure to attend regular checkups so that we can catch issues in their early stages. Early diagnosis and treatment are paramount to improving the chances of a successful restoration.
