Dental Crowns and Cosmetic Dentistry
Most people are aware of the use of dental crowns to repair a back molar that has been compromised by a large filling. Over the years, the filling—especially metal fillings, or amalgams—begins to fail and the tooth can develop hairline fractures. Because too much of the tooth structure has already been removed, the only option to preserve the tooth is a dental crown. Dental crowns are also used in our West Chester OH practice to strengthen a tooth that has been weakened by a root canal.
But dental crowns are also used for cosmetic reasons.
Cosmetic Uses for Dental Crowns
If a tooth is discolored and resistant to teeth whitening, a dental crown might be the ideal solution. The same holds true for a tooth that is misshapen or damaged; a dental crown will camouflage the issue and strengthen the tooth.
The Dental Crown Process
When you need a dental crown, it usually takes two trips to our office. At the first visit, we will shape the tooth to receive the crown, then take an impression which will go to our onsite lab for creation of a custom crown. We’ll fit you with a temporary crown before you leave our office
On your next visit, we will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent crown. Dr. Koch will adjust it to ensure you can still bite down comfortably. Once it has been made into the ideal shape, he will cement it into place so that your tooth is fully restored.
